Well, I suppose you know the yellow and black three wheeled contraption that zips through (if thats ever possible) throught the roads of Chennai, like the erstwile fishcarts. They are so numerous, just like the number of cabs in NYC. If you go to Usman road or Pondy bazaar and get a birds eye view, what you would probably see is black colour of the autorickshaws. Another problem is that half of the autos are unregistered.
Apart from the heart stopping feeling that u get when stuck in an auto that cuts across monster buses or takes turns that seem to defy newtons laws, ur blood pressure increases with every tick of the meter (if u r dumb enuf to engage an auto with meter) , as the driver coolly takes u around the city for a very short distance. If u do haggle about the prices, he always quotes 'no savari' or 'rain' or 'night time' or 'not peak hour' like that.
Anyway, here is an interesting calculation, autos are actually costlier that economy class in Jet Airways. Lets calculate. An auto usually charges 5 to 7 bucks a km. If u fly, lets say
from Chennai to Delhi , abt 2200km. If u do an early booking, it comes to about 9000Rs. Thats roughly about 4 Rs a km. Besides, it is much faster, far more safer, u get to travel in AC, u can take a lot more luggage, and u get five star quality food..... Which do u decide is cheaper huh?? (this was from a report I read in a Tamil Magazine called 'Kumudham')
